Laute, die du übst

Die Laute, die beim Lernen von Englisch am schwersten fallen. Dein Coach übt sie live mit dir, und Ausspracheübungen halten sie zwischen den Lektionen frisch.

  • p / b

pen / Ben, park / bark

Arabic has no p. Let a small puff of air out for p; b uses the voice.

  • v / f

very / ferry, van / fan

Both use the top teeth on the lower lip; only v uses the voice.

  • th

    think, three / this, mother

    Tongue lightly between the teeth — not s, t, z or d.

  • ship / sheep

sit / seat, full / fool

Short and long vowels change the word. Keep the short ones relaxed and quick.

  • str, spl, -sts

    street, splash, tests

Say consonant clusters without adding an extra vowel (not "es-treet").

  • word stress

    PHOtograph / phoTOgraphy

Stress moves between related words, and getting it wrong is harder to understand than a wrong sound.

Kultur und Umgangsformen

English has one "you", so politeness lives in the phrasing: indirect requests, please and thank you, and softer verbs. First names are normal at work in most English-speaking companies.

Could you…? / Would you mind…?
"Give me" sounds rude in English. Soften requests with could, would and please.
Hi Sarah / Dear Ms Jones
"Hi" plus a first name is standard in work email; "Dear" plus a title is for formal letters.
Sorry / Excuse me
Used much more than in Arabic — to get attention, to pass someone, or to ask someone to repeat.
How are you? — Good, thanks, and you?
A greeting, not a real question; a short answer is expected.
